Gus Carmichael is a former resident of Elmtree House II. He is currently part of an orchestra.[2] He is the boyfriend of Jenny.

Biography

Background

Gus' father is mentioned a couple of times, where he once visited him, and another time it is mentioned he has moved to Germany. Gus is known to have ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder), and he most noticeably has a form of OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder). One form of OCD is constant tidying and neatness. In Gus' case, he has his bedroom constantly tidy and everything has an exact position and place in the room, and he also sticks to a schedule day-to-day. If anything in Gus' room is moved, or if he doesn't stick to his schedule, he will get incredibly upset. People believe that Gus was placed into care due to his parents not being able to handle his ASD, however he was too young to have OCD at this point so that may not have been a factor at the time. There may also be other background reasons why Gus is in care.

Tracy Beaker Returns

Tracy Beaker Returns: Series 1

When Tracy first starts her job at the Dumping Ground, Gus attempts to give a Tracy a tour of the building (as he does with all newcomers), but this is repeatedly delayed due to Tracy continuously being late. Gus eventually does manage to show Tracy around, only for Tracy to repeatedly talk, which Gus feels is against his rules for the tour. She also writes in Gus' notebook, which upsets Gus greatly.

We later learn that Gus has made a list of all of everything Tracy has done wrong on her first day as staff. Liam suggests that Gus instead keep a list of everything Tracy has done right, which he eventually reads to Mike, convincing him to keep Tracy.

Gus likes keeping notebooks of his achievements, events that have taken place in the Dumping Ground and various lists (such as Mike's excuses for his "silent but deadlies"). In the episode Secrets, Liam and Frank discover Gus's notebooks and find Gus has written about them doing the bin dive. The books are confiscated by Mike and Gina, who too find that Gus has written incriminating things about them, leading to all four characters disposing of the pages from Gus' notebooks. Gus, however, finds out that pages have gone missing and reveals their contents at breakfast, telling everyone that if they are wanting to read his notebooks, they should ask first. Gus also enjoys playing the piano and has a set time during which he practices daily. He does not like to be interrupted during practice.

In the episode Sisters, Gus gets an audition for an orchestra for his piano playing. However, Tracy unintentionally spoils the journey by taking Lily to the Perrys en-route to reunite her with Rosie and Poppy. When her plan goes horribly and Lily having to be dragged back by Tracy, Gus becomes stressed, agitated and upset at Lily's crying, and he starts worrying about the time they have left to get to the audition. However, when Tracy finally makes it to the music school, Gus refuses to get off the taxi because, despite arriving a minute late, he doesn't have time to use the loo before his audition, as scheduled by him. They get home and Gus rebukes Tracy's attempts to make it up to him, saying that he scheduled it for today and all she had to do is to get him there on time, making her feel guilty. Luckily, she and Gina managed to arrange for the two music school representatives to come over and see Gus play the piano as an impromptu audition, much to the crowd's applause.

Tracy Beaker Returns: Series 2

In Series 2, Gus gets himself a date with a girl from his orchestra group, Jenny. He asks Dumping Ground kids and staff for advice and his date goes well. The day after the date, Jenny learns that some of the children have gone to entertain the elderly at a care home. This leads to Jenny and Gus entertaining the elderly on the flute and piano, respectively.

Tracy Beaker Returns: Series 3

In Series 3, Episode 2 Gus, with Tracy Beaker and Rick Barber discovers that Lizanne started the Burnywood fire and that Dennis started the attic fire.

It is known that Gus eats only quiche on Fridays, and macaroni cheese on Tuesdays.

The Dumping Ground

The Dumping Ground: Series 1

In the feature length series opener 'Freedom'. Gus has a meltdown due to sensory overload when all of the other children are shouting and fighting, and Frank and Rick playing their music really loud. He pulls the pin from a grenade and tells everyone to be quiet or he'll let go. Gus ended up dropping it when Rick tried to get it off him, but luckily Faith managed to throw it into the cellar to hopefully avoid anyone getting hurt, but the grenade does not explode so nobody is injured. Faith ends up calling the army group to remove the grenade, she's a bit shocked when they tell her that they're going to have to blow up the grenade whilst it's in the house before it's removed. But luckily it was a very small and tiny explosion.

Later in the series, Gus is fostered by a gay couple (Ronnie and Dawn) and leaves the dumping ground. This causes some of the other children in the Dumping Ground to fight due to some homophobia from Johnny Taylor and Lily Kettle. Mainly from Johnny who makes it very clear how he feels about the situation, causing him and Elektra to constantly fight, as Elektra was disgusted by what Johnny was saying and became very passionate to defend gay couples adopting and that it's Gus' decision, not Johnny's.
