"The Visitors" is the 1st episode in Series 3 of Tracy Beaker Returns and the 27th episode overall. It aired on 6th January 2012. It is the premiere of Series 3.

Synopsis[]

A power struggle ensues when four young people and their care worker arrive at the Dumping Ground after a fire at Burnywood.

Characters[]

Plot[]

Early one morning, the doorbell for Elmtree House is being frantically rung. When Tracy and some of the other kids get up to see who it is, a man with four other kids (Tyler, Rick, Lizanne and Kitty) barge in. Tracy attempts to question what’s going on when Carmen recognises them; they’re all from Burnywood and one of them Tyler was the one who stole all her belongings when she was there.

Eventually, it is revealed that a fire had happened at Burnywood, leaving it completely destroyed and the kids have had to be moved elsewhere and their care worker Dennis is left to work with Mike and Gina. Meanwhile, Tyler and Rick are moved into Sapphire’s old room (after she left to get her own flat), Kitty is given Toby’s old room (since he got fostered) and Lizanne is moved in with Elektra (to Elektra’s anger). While Tracy and Dennis are immediately at odds ends due to their differences in how to treat the kids, Johnny, Frank and Liam start to become friends with Tyler and Rick and gain a romantic attraction on Lizanne. Unfortunately, Carmen is still bitter about Tyler (especially after she thinks he’s stolen some of her shampoo, though it was actually Lizanne who didn’t know it was Carmen’s) and tries to get Elektra’s help to get him back (to no avail).

Tracy attempts to get through to Kitty and ask Dennis for what to do, but all he says is just to leave her alone (and even shows that there’s supposedly nothing else he can do) and gets annoyed when Tracy attempts to question this. Meanwhile, Lizanne gets upset about having to deal with Elektra and claims to have a panic attack, leaving Johnny to comfort her and offer to sleep with Tee while Lizanne has his room but first hides what he claims is letters from his father. After seeing Tyler fail to prank Gus with some plastic poo, Frank and Liam decide to play a real prank with him by pouring washing up liquid into the toilet while Tracy tries to get Kitty to connect with Tee upon finding out about their similar taste in sewing. After becoming a victim to Liam, Frank and Tyler’s prank, Elektra attempts to go after Tyler when she sees him, only for him to evade her in the attic. This spurs Elektra to exact revenge on Tyler with Carmen by seemingly just taking Tyler’s belongings and hiding them for a while (which they convince Tracy about after she catches them). Elektra, however, decides to destroy it all with a lighter she found in Tyler’s possession and some fireworks he had, leading to Carmen and Elektra being grounded and forced to compensate for Tyler’s belongings (as well as some of Rick’s) while Tyler is grounded without TV for having had fireworks.

Kitty gets scared due to the noise, so Tee attempts to comfort her for what she just had to deal with, only for her to push Tee away since she doesn’t like being touched (which Tee tells Tracy about). Meanwhile, Johnny reveals that the letters are actually his stash of money and that it’s been taken, which he blames Lizanne on (though she attempts to claim otherwise). After he informs Mike about this, Dennis orders for a room search to be carried out which sends Gus into turmoil when Dennis ends up looking inappropriately through his room (and is worsened when he becomes a victim to Tyler, Frank and Liam’s earlier prank) while Carmen is made fun of by a lot of the other kids when she reveals that someone has put glue in her shampoo. All the chaos leads to Harry calling Sapphire in distress from the office. It also becomes too much for Kitty to bare and she accidentally pushes Tracy down the stairs, leading to Tracy ending up in hospital when Sapphire arrives. Mike attempts to call for Kitty to be taken to a secure care home, but Dennis argues against this; he instead claims that the Dumping Ground is out of control, citing the day’s events as his point, and blames it all on Mike since he’s apparently not disciplining the kids enough or allowing them proper boundaries (and instead just deals with them in a way that Dennis doesn’t believe is working). When Mike attempts to state that he’s trying to make sure the kids are happy and in a healthy environment, Dennis just ignores him and forcefully takes over the home.

While the kids become divided over Kitty, Mike finds that Tracy’s wrist is badly sprained but is otherwise alright. As opposed to Mike’s attempts to call the police concerning the theft of Johnny’s money, Dennis decides to have the other kids’ allowances compensate for it and closes the home to anyone but the residents and staff (despite Mike’s protests). Carmen soon finds Tyler crying in his room and holding the only birthday card his mother gave him and he was able to recover from when she and Elektra tried to destroy his belongings. After he admits to having put the glue in her shampoo, the two decide to make amends and they and most of the kids meet in Liam’s room concerning what they’re going to do about everything that Dennis is doing. After Gus and Sapphire refer to what happened the last time they tried to protest against recent events, Rick and Lizanne state that there’s nothing anyone can do as Dennis will treat them worse if they attempt to rebel against him when he breaks up their meeting. Lizanne, meanwhile, is soon revealed to have taken Johnny’s money and has moved in with Elektra (which neither are happy about). When Tracy returns from the hospital with Gina, they are shocked by what they see; Dennis having taken over the Dumping Ground.

Trivia[]

  • The opening theme's opening notes are changed back to the way they were during the first half of series 2.
  • Tyler, Rick, Kitty and Lizanne live in Elmtree House.
  • The original back-to-back broadcast trimmed down a number of scenes, including:
    • The start of the episode where Dennis rings the doorbell the first time (instead starting from when he is ringing it the second time with Tracy and the others already on the ground floor).
    • Liam and Tyler & Rick’s rooms being searched.
    • Dennis blaming the day's events on Mike.
    • Lizanne handling Johnny's cash in Elektra's bedroom.
  • Toby has been fostered.
  • Sapphire lives independently.
  • When the kids try to think of a way to oppose Dennis, events from The Burnywood Menace are referenced, including Lily falling off the roof, which is mentioned as a counterargument to staging a protest, and Sapphire having to stop anyone calling the police after it is suggested the kids barricade themselves in the basement. Dennis also refers to it when he tells Mike that he has been on "thin ice" since his tribunal after the protest.
    • Ironically, the kids’ protest in the aforementioned episode led to some of them being sent to Burnywood and Carmen encountering Tyler.

Errors[]

  • Dennis doesn't recognise Sapphire, even though he was a care worker when she, Carmen and Harry lived at Burnywood for a short period of time in series 2. Although this could've been a way of showing Dennis' lack of care for the children.
  • After Kitty pushed Tracy down the stairs, Tracy was taken to hospital and Gina accompanied her. But in the office during Mike and Dennis' argument after Dennis blamed Mike for the day's events, Gina was in the office during this. But the next scene shows Mike and Dennis going into the living room where all the kids are (apart from Kitty) with Mike saying that Gina just rung from the hospital saying that Tracy had a badly sprained wrist. When she had just been in the office with Mike and Dennis.
  • All the bubbles and foam that appear when Elektra flushes the toilet just disappear.
  • Johnny says that the money in the envelope is letters from his father. This is an error because his mother split up from him and did not know him. (Although this could just be something he said out of lack of confidence to Lizanne.)
  • Mike says that there are only two spare rooms (as Sapphire and Toby moved out). However, in Crushed Carmen moved out of her current room at the time into Rosie and Poppy's old room leaving Carmen's previous bedroom vacant. So there should be three spare rooms.
  • When Elektra first enters the bathroom, she flushes the toilet as soon as she enters the room before she'd actually gone to the toilet. Although it's possible that whoever went to the toilet before her never flushed the loo or flushed it properly.
